Event Description:
Did you know that MFK Fisher, the famous writer, lived in the Hemet area early in her career and wrote some of her most famous books here? She and her husband bought a cabin near the Ramona Bowl in 1940 and named the property "Bareacres," described as "90 acres of rocks and rattlesnakes". She loved the location and wrote about it with lyrical affection. The property was sold in the 1950's when MFK moved to Northern California.
Hemet Museum Open House and MFK Fisher Day will include speakers knowledgeable about the life of Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher (July 3, 1908 - June 22, 1992). MFK Fisher was a preeminent American writer. She wrote 27 books, which were an amalgam of food, travel and memoir, as well as a brilliant translation of Brillat-Savarin's Physiology of Taste. Most are still in print and are considered classics of the genre. W.H. Auden wrote of her work: "I do not know of anyone in the United States who writes better prose." The program will include: Hourly speakers will introduce MFK Fisher: Dick Schmitt, who lives on Bareacres and will talk about the house and property; Jo Daugherty, retired Hemet Library Director, speaking on MFK Fisher's life and career; and Anne B. Jennings, exhibit preparator, who will discuss the writer's years in Hemet. MFK Fisher memorabilia from Bareacres will be on exhibit and for sale. MFK Fisher's books will be available for browsing. Visitors may order copies through the Hemet Museum. Light refreshments will be served in Destination Coffee Bar & Bistro in front of the Depot. Hemet Museum volunteers will give tours of the museum and answer any questions.
